Easy silver care in the kitchen.

今年の初め、某テレビ局のお正月特番で紹介されていた、黒ずんでしまったシルバー製品のお手入れ方法を試してみた。

その方法がこちら。
①鍋に塩と水を1：5の割合になるように入れて沸騰させる。
②①の塩が完全に溶けたら弱火にし、市販のアルミホイルを鍋の底に敷く（火傷に注意）。
③②のアルミホイルの上に変色してしまったシルバー製品を数秒間入れる（火傷に注意）。
※シルバー製品の表面から細かい泡が出るので、それが出なくなるまでが目安。
それ以上入れると変色する恐れがあるので注意。
また、メッキ加工されているものや石がついているものは入れないこと。
④水道水でよく濯ぎ、水分をよく拭き取った後自然乾燥させる。
⑤シルバークロスやセーム革などで磨いて仕上げる。

その結果がこちら。

お手入れ前のものは、全体がオレンジっぽく変色（一部は黒く変色）していたけど、お手入れ後のものはそれがなくなっていた。

定期的に作品の手入れはするのでひどく変色させることはないけど、上記のお手入れ前の写真のように全体的にオレンジっぽく変色していることはある。
蜜蝋鋳造技法の作品は凹凸が多く、変色してしまうと磨くのが大変なので、楽にお手入れできる方法はないものか…と思っていたので、試してみた。
（シルバーポリッシュ液は臭いが強いし、しっかり濯がないとすぐに変色してくるので個人的にはあまり使いたくない。）
石やパールがついている作品は、一旦外さないとダメだけど、これは一度に沢山の作品の手入れも可能みたいだし手軽でいいのでは、と思っている。

濃い塩水を使用するので、よく濯いだとしても長期保管時の状態が気になる…それはこれから検証予定。

Earlier this year, I tried a method of caring for darkened silverware that was introduced on a TV station’s New Year’s special program.

Here is the method.
① Put salt and water in a pot at a ratio of 1:5 and bring to a boil.
② When the salt in ① is completely melted, reduce the heat low and lay commercially available aluminum foil on the bottom of the pot (be careful not to burn yourself).
③ Place the discolored silverware on the aluminum foil in ② for a few seconds (be careful not to burn yourself).
③ Place the blackened silverware on the aluminum foil for a few seconds (be careful not to burn yourself).
If you put more than that, it may discolor the product.
Do not put in silverware that is plated or has stones on it.
④ Rinse well with tap water, wipe off the water well, and let dry naturally.
⑤ Polish and finish with silver cloth or chamois leather.

The ones before the care had an orangey discoloration (some were black) all over, but after the care, it was gone.

I take care of my work regularly so I don’t discolor it badly, but there are times when the overall color is discolored to an orangey color, as in the above photo before care.
Beeswax casting technique works have many uneven surfaces, so it is difficult to polish them if they become discolored, so I wondered if there was an easy way to clean them… So I thought I would give it a try.
(I personally don’t like to use silver polish solution because it has a strong smell and if you don’t rinse it thoroughly it will discolor quickly.)
I’m thinking that this is a good and easy way to clean a lot of pieces at once, although you have to remove the stones and pearls from the pieces once they are attached.

I’m concerned about the condition of the product in long-term storage, even if it is rinsed well, because of the thick salt water used… That will be verified in the future.
